During the early 1990s, we had the good fortune to participate in the gene sequencing revolution. At the time, the human genome remained unsequenced, and the scientific community held fervent hope that unlocking its mysteries would lead to groundbreaking medicines and cures. Our work involved preparing human tissues from various organs, disease states, and developmental stages, isolating their messenger RNA (mRNA), and performing differential analyses on expression patterns to identify genes of interest. Once identified, we expressed the corresponding proteins and tested them in cell-based assays. To support this cutting-edge research, we had to build our own software pipeline—commercial tools simply didn’t exist.
Later, when the company pivoted to pharmaceutical development, we encountered a new challenge. Instead of creating an integrated software pipeline, we were encouraged to purchase and integrate various off-the-shelf point solutions, each with acronyms like LIMS, ERP, CAPA, and DMS. These systems, while useful, were vertically oriented. Their functionality often stopped at departmental boundaries, leaving it to the business to build the necessary integrations. Friction emerged as each system created silos, complicating collaboration and data flow.
This experience directly inspired the creation of our software platform, 1Platform4® Manufacturing.
